An Explanation That Chocolate Does Not Cause Acne
September 28, 2007

Chocolate does not cause acne. In fact, it has a number of qualities and properties that make it quite good for you. As proof of the fact that chocolate does not cause acne we turn to turn separate professional research studies.
The University of Pennsylvania studied the issue of chocolate and what it might do to cause acne. They broke the subjects up into two groups. The control group was given bars that looked and tasted like chocolate but actually had no chocolate. 28 percent of their contents was actually vegetable fat, as an imitation of the fat that is found in a chocolate bar. The chocolate bar ingredients that create this fat are typically chocolate liquor and cocoa butter. Then the second group of test subjects was also given chocolate bars. These, however, had almost ten times as much chocolate liquor in each bar than what we would generally find in an average size chocolate bar (weighing 1.4 ounces.) The study concluded with the realization that there was no significant difference in the breakout of acne by the members of either group.
The United States Naval Academy studied the issue of chocolate and acne outbreak recently as well. They studied 80 naval students at the academy for four weeks. The first group was denied any chocolate during the entire time. The second group was given a minimum of three chocolate bars every day during the month. At the end of the four weeks, the groups switched roles and again the issue was studied. Clinical observations of both parts of the study indicated no change in acne patterns from one group to another.
One physician in Australia suggested the myth of chocolate causing acne starting because chocolate is high in fact and sebum, a fatty oil, cause acne and zits by blocking skin ducts. Someone along the way, conjectured Dr. Karl Kruszelnick, simply decided that fat is fat and if one type of fat causes acne and a food substance is high in fat it must, indeed, also cause acne. This theory was proven to be in error.
The even better news for acne sufferers who happen to love chocolate is that the delightful snack actually can reduce your bad cholesterol when the flavonoids contained in the chocolate do what antioxidants do best – lower cholesterol.
