Adderall and Stratterra - Effects on Hormones and Acne
September 28, 2007

Adderall and strattera are amphetamines prescribed to children and teens suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD.)
Not only have the two medicines caused, or perhaps caused, other medical problems that include death, they both wreak havoc on healthy skin. Acne is often the result for those who are prescribed either strattera or adderall for their ADHD. When the drug is discontinued the acne has been seen to clear up.
It may be that the accelerating factor of the amphetamine increases perspiration which increases oil and bacteria on the skin. Caffeine intake has long been thought to be a cause of some acne, and amphetamines often have large doses of caffeine.
Many who try one or other of the anti-deficit disorder drugs are prescribed a combination of both. The Strattera tends to elevate the effect of the Adderall and once that is increased the acne seems to get worse as well.
There are other reasons that may warn you off adderall and strattera besides the acne it creates or exacerbates.
Adderall has been now linked to sudden deaths such as strokes and heart related ailments in adults but also in children. Strattera has been determined as a possible cause of liver damage and even failure. There have been patients who were on Strattera who died or ended up surviving only through a liver transplant.
Canada has actually taken Adderall off the market, although the United States refuses to follow the Canadian lead.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning for Strattera that goes far beyond its tendency to cause mild or even severe acne. The FDA has advised physicians, caregivers and parents to watch for suicidal ideation in children taking Strattera. This warning came as a result of a clinical trial of more than 2000, in which .4 percent of the children that were treated with Strattera rather than the placebo reported thoughts of suicide. One child attempted suicide during the trial while on the drug. No one given the placebo reported any suicidal thoughts.
